Holding the Man

A frank, sexy and tender account of Tim Conigrave and John Caleo, his lover of 15 years. We follow them from their first meeting at high school, to falling in love, separating, reuniting, to the painful death of John from AIDS. Conigrave himself died from AIDS just after completing the book. What I so enjoyed about this writing was the refreshing Australian idiom and references; the landscape, language and music that were part and parcel of Australia in the 1970s-90s. Conigrave wrote with passion and honesty and I read the last few chapters through a fog of tears. This is a very special story and I recommend it unreservedly.

Black Hours

This is one of the only memoirs of a gay Aboriginal experience. Wayne King felt himself to be an outsider wherever he went in Australia-whether it was Dinmore, the suburb of Ipswich he grew up in, or the cosmopolitan sprawl of Sydney. In dealing with his own isolation, he found strength after learning of his own mother's forced separation from her parents at a young age.
