Superfudge

More funny stories about Fudge from the author of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. Fudge is 4 now, and just as bad as ever, but now he isn't Peter's only problem. In this book, their parents surprise the boys with a new baby sister, Tootsie. So Peter has 2 younger siblings to watch now. Having been discovered as a preschool genius, Fudge hits school early. There Fudge's teachers always call on Peter first when he's in trouble again. Another book great for a laugh.

Night letters

It's worth paying the extra money for the sumptuous hardback edition, complete with embossed gold lettering and a glorious Italianate picture on the cover. It feels sensuous in the hands as you turn the pages, cramped with tightly spaced lettering that lure the eye and the mind together. The reader will find himself lingering over phrases and single words, savouring the skill of the writer in conveying his images of Italy. It has the same seductive quality as Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow, but the urge to solve the mystery keeps the pages turning in Smilla; Dessaix's writing is more thought-provoking, leading one to pause, to consider, to re-read and to hatch plans to read the books and poems he scatters through the book, that one might one day become as wise and witty and philosphical as he is. There is no plot, it's a journey through the soul, pondering life and death, good and evil and how to respond to both. The letter-writer's thoughts wander through life as his body wanders through Italy, conveying its history, charm and squalor as he travels. A delight to read.
