Matthew Farrer

Matthew Farrer is an Australian science fiction author and one of the longest-serving contributors to Games Workshop's Black Library, writing professionally since the late 1990s. He is best known for the Shira Calpurnia novels — Crossfire, Legacy, and Blind, later collected as the Enforcer omnibus — which follow a commander of the Adeptus Arbites, the Imperium's internal police, investigating conspiracies in the vast fortress-system of Hydraphur. The trilogy is a standout in the Warhammer 40,000 line precisely because it isn't about Space Marines: it's a slower-burning procedural thriller that uses law enforcement and political intrigue to explore the grinding machinery of Imperial rule, giving it a different flavour from the battlefield-focused fiction most of his peers write.

Farrer also contributed the novel Blades of Reason and a run of well-regarded short fiction to the Horus Heresy anthology series, plus stories touching on the Eldar, the Iron Hands, and the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, and has written for Warhammer Fantasy as well.

A new reader curious about his work should start with Crossfire — it stands reasonably well alone and sets up Calpurnia's world before the trilogy tightens its political stakes in Legacy and Blind. He remains an active, if less prolific, voice in the Black Library stable, valued for prose that rewards patience over spectacle.
