Alastair Reynolds

Alastair Reynolds is a British science fiction author and former research astronomer, holding a PhD in astronomy and having worked for the European Space Agency in the Netherlands for over a decade before leaving to write full-time. That scientific background is a defining feature of his fiction, which is generally classified as hard science fiction and known for scrupulous attention to physical plausibility, particularly the absence of faster-than-light travel and the resulting vast, cold distances of interstellar space. He is best known for the Revelation Space series, a dark, far-future space opera exploring posthuman civilizations, ancient alien threats and the psychological toll of relativistic travel, alongside further series including Poseidon's Wake and House of Suns and numerous standalone novels. His work has won the British Science Fiction Association Award and been shortlisted for major genre awards including the Arthur C. Clarke Award. Reynolds is credited as a co-author on The Medusa Chronicles (2016), a novel written with Stephen Baxter as an authorized sequel to Arthur C. Clarke's short story "A Meeting with Medusa," continuing the story of astronaut Howard Falcon across a vast span of future history. The collaboration paired Reynolds's hard-SF rigor with Baxter's own established expertise in scientifically grounded speculative fiction and his history of extending other authors' universes.
