Series Like Goosebumps: What to Read Next After R. L. Stine's Classic
Finished the original Goosebumps run and want more? You have plenty of options. Some of them come from the same author, and some come from other writers who work in horror.
This guide is a reading path, not a ranking. We built it from facts in our own catalogue. Where a pick is our editorial opinion, we say so plainly. First, though, let us look at what Goosebumps is in our data.
What the catalogue says about Goosebumps
The original Goosebumps series has 62 books. Our catalogue lists it as completed, with publication running from 1992 to 1997. Specifically, the first entry is Welcome to Dead House, and the last is Monster Blood IV.
According to the series page, nearly every book is a standalone story. A few have direct sequels, so those are best read in pairs. If you want to understand how orders work in general, our guide to publication order vs chronological order explains the difference.
Furthermore, the page notes that Stine kept going after book 62. That brings us to the first stop on the path.
Step one: the rest of the Goosebumps family
The simplest “series like Goosebumps” is, of course, more Goosebumps. R. L. Stine kept the brand alive in several spin-offs, and our catalogue tracks each one separately. Here is the lineup, with book counts and years taken straight from the series pages.
| Series | Books | Years | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goosebumps Series 2000 | 24 | 1997-1999 | Completed |
| Goosebumps HorrorLand | 19 | 2008-2011 | Completed |
| Goosebumps Hall of Horrors | 6 | 2011-2012 | Completed |
| Goosebumps Most Wanted | 10 | 2012-2016 | Completed |
| Goosebumps SlappyWorld | 19 | 2017-2023 | Completed |
| Goosebumps House of Shivers | 8 | 2023 onward | Ongoing |
In addition, our catalogue holds a four-book Goosebumps Most Wanted Special Edition. Counting it with the original run, the eight Goosebumps-branded series add up to 152 books by our catalogue counts. So you have plenty of reading before you ever leave the brand.
Where to begin inside the brand
We suggest Goosebumps Series 2000 first since it follows directly after the original run ended in 1997. Next, try HorrorLand, which ties SlappyWorld as the longest of the later runs after Series 2000, with 19 books each. Finally, pick up SlappyWorld or House of Shivers if you want the most recent books.
However, House of Shivers is the only one of these still marked ongoing. Our catalogue counts eight books for it but lists seven, so the eighth is an unconfirmed claim. We do not have a confirmed next title or date for it, so check its series page for the latest status rather than relying on a guess.
Step two: Stine’s other horror series
Next, move to the other horror series by the same author. Although they share a writer, they are separate worlds with their own books and years. Our R. L. Stine author page lists all twelve of his series in the catalogue.
- Fear Street: 49 books, completed, 1989-1997. It runs alongside the original Goosebumps years, so it is a natural next stop.
- The Nightmare Room: 12 books, completed, 2000-2001.
- Mostly Ghostly: 8 books, completed, 2004-2006.
For example, our editorial take is that Fear Street suits readers who want a longer run. The Nightmare Room is a better fit if you prefer a shorter commitment. We base that only on book counts, not on any claim about tone or reading level, since our catalogue does not store those.
One series that is not horror
Rotten School is also by Stine. However, our catalogue files it as middle-grade comedy rather than horror. It has 16 books, all completed, from 2005 to 2008. Consider it a bonus if you like his voice and want a break from the scares.
Step three: horror series by other authors
Once you have worked through Stine, however, you can branch out. Our horror genre hub collects the series we tag as horror. Nine of them are by authors other than Stine, and all nine are marked completed.
We picked our shortlist with three simple criteria. First, the series must be tagged horror in our catalogue. Second, it must be completed, so you can read to the end. Third, it must have eight books or fewer, so it feels manageable after a long Goosebumps binge. This is our editorial method. It says nothing about which books are scarier or better.
Here are all nine series that fit, ordered by length.
- Newsflesh by Mira Grant: 8 books, 2010-2016.
- The Green Mile by Stephen King: 6 books, published in 1996.
- The Power of Five by Anthony Horowitz: 5 books, 2005-2012.
- Demon Road by Derek Landy: 3 books, 2015-2016.
- The Gwendy Trilogy by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar: 3 books, 2017-2022.
- Parasitology by Mira Grant: 3 books, 2013-2015.
- Blue Rose Trilogy by Peter Straub: 3 books, 1988-1993.
- Arkham Horror: The Dark Waters Trilogy by Graham McNeill: 3 books, 2011-2014.
- The Shining by Stephen King: 2 books, 1977-2013.
Notice that several of these are short. For that reason, they suit readers who like to finish what they start. Our list of completed trilogies and duologies covers many more short, finished series across other genres.
A note on age and content
Our catalogue does not store age ranges or content ratings. Therefore, we cannot tell you which of these suit younger readers. The Goosebumps page mentions an age group in its own FAQ, but we have not verified that for the other series. Check the books yourself before handing them to a child.
A sample reading plan
Maybe you want a concrete route. Here is one example, built only from the counts above, so adjust it to taste.
First, finish any original Goosebumps books you skipped. Then read Goosebumps Series 2000, which has 24 books. After that, switch to Fear Street for a longer run, or to The Nightmare Room for a shorter one. Finally, close with a finished series by another author, such as Demon Road at three books. As a result, you move from familiar ground to new voices without ever starting a series you cannot finish.
How to pick your next series
Three questions can narrow things down quickly. Besides, they all work with the data we have.
- Do you want a finished story? Choose a series marked completed. Our guide to completed fantasy series applies the same idea to another genre.
- Do you want a long run or a short one? Fear Street has 49 books, while Demon Road has three. For the other extreme, see our look at the longest book series in the catalogue, where Goosebumps appears with 62 books.
- Do you want more from one author? Start with the author page. If you enjoy thrillers too, our post on authors like James Patterson works the same way for another writer.
In the end, whichever you choose, the series page shows the full book list and the last-verified status. Use it as your starting point.
