C. J. Sansom

C. J. Sansom was a British historical novelist best known for the Shardlake series, following Matthew Shardlake, a hunchbacked lawyer navigating the dangerous politics and religious upheaval of Henry VIII's England, beginning with Dissolution in 2003. The series was praised for its unusually rigorous historical research — Sansom held a PhD in history — combined with genuinely satisfying mystery plotting, following Shardlake through real Tudor-era crises including the dissolution of the monasteries, the fall of Anne Boleyn's circle, and the Pilgrimage of Grace. The series was adapted into Shardlake, a television series produced for Disney+, which brought the character to a much wider audience shortly after Sansom's death.

Beyond Shardlake, Sansom wrote the standalone alternate-history novel Dominion, imagining a Britain that made peace with Nazi Germany in 1940, and Winter in Madrid, set during the Spanish Civil War's aftermath. His fiction consistently paired deep archival research with genuine narrative tension, avoiding both dry pastiche and anachronistic modern sensibility in its historical characters. New readers should start with Dissolution, since Shardlake's personal relationships and understanding of the Tudor court's dangers accumulate across the series. Sansom died in April 2024 after a long illness; the Shardlake series, at seven novels, is complete.
