David Lagercrantz

David Lagercrantz is a Swedish author and journalist best known for continuing Stieg Larsson's Millennium series after Larsson's death in 2004 left an unfinished fourth manuscript and extensive notes. Selected by Larsson's estate and publisher, Lagercrantz wrote The Girl in the Spider's Web (2015), continuing the story of hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist, followed by The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye and The Girl Who Lived Twice, extending the series to seven books before authorship passed to Swedish author Karin Smirnoff for subsequent installments. The Girl in the Spider's Web was adapted into a 2018 film starring Claire Foy.

Before taking on Millennium, Lagercrantz was known in Sweden as a journalist and biographer, most notably as co-author, with footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović, of the bestselling memoir I Am Zlatan Ibrahimović, as well as for a biography of codebreaker Alan Turing. Continuing another author's beloved, unfinished series drew significant scrutiny and mixed critical reaction, with Lagercrantz working to balance Larsson's established tone and politically engaged Swedish-crime-fiction sensibility against his own voice. New readers of the wider Millennium series should still start with Larsson's original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo before reaching Lagercrantz's continuation novels, since Salander and Blomkvist's backstories are established there.
