Edna Buchanan

Edna Buchanan has 17 known credited books (17 published) across 2 series. Start with Britt Montero.

Edna Buchanan was born March 16, 1939, in Paterson, New Jersey. She joined the Miami Herald's police beat in 1973 and spent nearly two decades chronicling the city's murders and mayhem with a reporting style that became legendary in newsrooms for its unsparing, often darkly funny precision -- famous opening lines like "Gary Robinson died hungry" set the standard for the genre. That work won her the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for General News Reporting, cited for versatile and consistently excellent police-beat coverage, and her Herald years supplied the raw material for a run of true-crime nonfiction and memoir. Buchanan turned to crime fiction in 1990 with Nobody Lives Forever, and two years later introduced Britt Montero, a Cuban-American Miami newspaper reporter closely modeled on her own beat, in Contents Under Pressure (1992) -- a series that ran to ten books over more than two decades. She also wrote a shorter police-procedural series following cold-case detective Craig Burch, plus several further standalone novels, and contributed a chapter to Naked Came the Manatee (1996), a round-robin novel serialized in the Miami Herald and co-written with twelve other South Florida crime writers including Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard. As of a December 2023 report, Buchanan, then 84, was living with dementia in a Homestead, Florida care facility.
