J. D. Robb

J. D. Robb is the pseudonym under which bestselling romance novelist Nora Roberts writes the In Death series, a near-future police-procedural saga following NYPSD homicide lieutenant Eve Dallas. Roberts adopted the pen name in 1995, with Naked in Death, partly to keep the futuristic mystery line distinct from her contemporary romances and partly so bookstores could shelve two new Roberts titles in the same month without cannibalizing sales. The arrangement is now an open secret rather than a true secret; her publisher and readers alike treat J. D. Robb as a known alter ego.

Under the Robb name she has built one of the longest continuously running series by a single author in crime fiction, releasing two full-length entries a year (plus novellas) since the mid-1990s, all set in a lightly futurized 2058-onward New York. Each book is a genuine whodunit, but the throughline is Eve's marriage to reformed criminal-turned-billionaire Roarke and her slow recovery from a brutal childhood, giving the series a serialized emotional core alongside its case-of-the-book plotting. New readers should start at the beginning with Naked in Death, since the relationships and Eve's backstory accumulate steadily across the run. There is no screen adaptation; the series' following has been built entirely through the books' word-of-mouth and Roberts/Robb's remarkable release pace.
