James Swallow

James Swallow is a London-based British author and scriptwriter, born in 1969, whose career spans novels, comics, video games, radio and television. He is a New York Times, Sunday Times and Amazon bestseller, a BAFTA nominee, and the only British writer to have worked on a Star Trek television series. Within Black Library he is best known for his Blood Angels novels, beginning with Deus Encarmine, which explore one of Warhammer 40,000's most tragic and emotionally driven Space Marine chapters, alongside extensive Horus Heresy contributions. Outside Warhammer, Swallow created the Marc Dane spy-thriller series and has written tie-in fiction and scripts for Doctor Who, Star Wars, Halo and the TV series 24, as well as numerous video game scripts. A new reader wanting his best-known Warhammer work should start with the Blood Angels novels for character-driven Space Marine fiction with genuine emotional stakes; those preferring contemporary thrillers should try the Marc Dane series instead. His range across media — game scripts, television, prose fiction — is unusually wide even by Black Library standards, and it's this versatility, more than any single screen adaptation of his own novels, that defines his career.
