Joanne Fluke

Joanne Fluke is the pen name of Joanne Fischmann, born in 1943 in Swanville, Minnesota, small-town roots she gave directly to her best-known character. Before settling into cozy mysteries, she worked an eclectic string of jobs (teacher, psychologist, musician, private investigator's assistant, short-order cook, caterer, TV production assistant) and wrote under several other pseudonyms, including Jo Gibson and Kathryn Kirkwood, across earlier suspense and horror novels. None of that quite prepared readers for the scale of what came next. Starting with Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder (2000), Fluke built the Hannah Swensen series around a Lake Eden, Minnesota bakery owner who stumbles into a murder roughly once a book, usually near a fresh batch of cookies. Every entry includes full, genuinely usable recipes for the desserts on the page, an unresolved love triangle between dentist Norman and detective Mike, and a cast of nosy small-town regulars, a formula that made it one of the best-selling culinary cozy series ever written and the basis for Hallmark's Murder, She Baked movies. New readers should start with Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder and read in order, since Hannah's relationships and business develop across the series. Fluke's next planned entry, Pumpkin Chiffon Pie Murder, has been delayed with no confirmed release as of this writing.
