Joel Rosenberg

Joel Rosenberg was an American fantasy author, best known for his own Guardians of the Flame series (about role-playing gamers transported into the fantasy world their game is based on), who co-wrote Murder in LaMut with Raymond E. Feist as part of the Legends of the Riftwar trilogy. Murder in LaMut is a fantasy whodunit set in a besieged garrison town during the original Riftwar, one of three standalone side-adventures in the trilogy, each co-written by Feist with a different collaborator and following a different cast of soldiers and mercenaries caught up in the war's margins. Rosenberg's own fiction was known for grounding fantasy adventure in a distinctly practical, procedural sensibility — his gamers-in-a-fantasy-world premise treated magic and combat with an engineer's attention to logistics and consequence rather than pure spectacle — a sensibility well suited to Murder in LaMut's mystery structure, which required building a plausible, closed-circle whodunit within Feist's established Midkemia setting rather than a straightforward battle narrative. Rosenberg published steadily across multiple fantasy series from the 1980s through the 2000s and was known within the genre for combining traditional adventure fantasy with an unusually grounded, consequence-driven approach to worldbuilding. He died in 2011.
