John Grisham

John Grisham is an American author widely credited with popularizing the modern legal thriller, having sold hundreds of millions of books across a career built on tightly plotted stories of lawyers, courtrooms, and corporate or criminal conspiracy. A former lawyer and Mississippi state legislator, Grisham broke out with A Time to Kill and then The Firm, and went on to write a long run of bestsellers including The Pelican Brief, The Client, The Rainmaker, and The Chamber, many of which were adapted into major Hollywood films throughout the 1990s starring actors including Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, and Matthew McConaughey.

Beyond standalone legal thrillers, Grisham has written recurring series, including several novels following small-town lawyer Jake Brigance (beginning with A Time to Kill and continuing in Sycamore Row and A Time for Mercy) and the Theodore Boone series for younger readers, following a thirteen-year-old aspiring lawyer. He has also written well-regarded nonfiction and true-crime narratives, and co-written thrillers with other authors including James Patterson. His novels are known for accessible, plot-forward prose grounded in real legal procedure, drawing on his own courtroom experience.
