Kiera Cass

Kiera Cass is an American young adult author best known for The Selection series, a dystopian romance following America Singer, a young woman competing among 35 girls for the hand of a prince in a caste-stratified future America, structured with the competitive premise deliberately echoing reality dating shows. Beginning with The Selection in 2012, the series became a major bestseller with young adult readers, expanding to a core trilogy plus companion novels and a later sequel series, The Heir and The Crown, which shift perspective to the next generation. Cass built the series' appeal around a blend of glossy royal-court romance and lighter dystopian stakes than much of the YA dystopian wave that surrounded it, distinguishing it from grimmer contemporaries like The Hunger Games by keeping the focus on courtship, rivalry, and gown-and-ballroom spectacle. New readers should start with The Selection to meet America and the competition from the beginning. There is no film or television adaptation of the series to date, despite periodic development interest. Cass followed The Selection with a second royal-romance duology, The Betrothed (2020-2021), set in an unrelated fantasy kingdom, and has also written two standalone novels: The Siren (a substantially rewritten 2016 release of a story she first self-published online in 2008-2009) and A Thousand Heartbeats (2022), a captive-princess enemies-to-lovers romance.
