Lisa Tuttle

Lisa Tuttle is an American-born author who has spent most of her career living in the United Kingdom, writing science fiction, fantasy, and horror across novels, short fiction, and criticism. She won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 1974 and has published widely across genres, including supernatural fiction, feminist fantasy, and detective fiction featuring her recurring investigator Jesperson and Lane.

Tuttle is closely associated with George R. R. Martin through Windhaven, a science-fantasy novel the two co-wrote, first serialized in the late 1970s and published in full in 1981. Set on a storm-wracked ocean world settled by shipwrecked colonists who develop lightweight wings to glide between scattered islands, Windhaven follows a young woman's fight to open the closed, hereditary caste of "flyers" to outsiders. The novel became a cult favorite within science fiction and later received a follow-up collection of related short fiction, Storms of Windhaven.

Beyond her collaboration with Martin, Tuttle has written extensively on her own, publishing acclaimed horror and dark fantasy novels such as Lost Futures and The Silver Bough, along with short-story collections and nonfiction genre criticism. She remains active as a writer and reviewer within the science fiction and fantasy field.
