Mary Pope Osborne is an American children's author best known for the Magic Tree House series, which follows siblings Jack and Annie as a mysterious tree house whisks them to different eras and places -- dinosaur time, ancient Egypt, the Titanic, the Amazon -- for short, fact-grounded adventures. Since the first title appeared in 1992, the series has grown into one of the most widely read early-chapter-book franchises in the world, credited by many teachers and parents with turning reluctant readers into confident ones.

Before turning to children's books, Osborne worked as a travel agent, drama teacher, and medical assistant, and traveled widely in Asia in her twenties -- experiences that fed her lifelong interest in history, folklore, and faraway settings. She has also written retellings of mythology and fairy tales, and paired the original Magic Tree House novels with nonfiction "Fact Tracker" companions co-written with her husband, Will Osborne, so young readers can dig deeper into whatever period just captured their imagination.

A new reader (or the adult reading aloud) should simply start with book one, Dinosaurs Before Dark, and follow the numbered order -- the appeal is cumulative, with Jack and Annie's confidence and knowledge building book by book. There is no film or TV adaptation; the series' reach comes entirely from decades of steady, trusted print sales and classroom use.
