Robert Harris

Robert Harris is a British author and former journalist and BBC television reporter who turned to fiction with Fatherland (1992), an alternate-history thriller imagining a world in which Nazi Germany won the Second World War, which became an international bestseller and established the meticulously researched, politically literate style that has defined his career since. Harris's background covering British and European politics as a journalist informs almost all of his fiction, which tends to dramatize real or plausible institutional machinery — intelligence services, the Vatican, the financial markets, the Roman Senate — under extreme pressure. His Cicero trilogy (Imperium, Lustrum, and Dictator), narrated by the Roman statesman's secretary Tiro, reconstructs the last decades of the Roman Republic with unusual procedural precision, drawing on Cicero's own surviving letters and speeches. Elsewhere, Harris has written standalone thrillers spanning Enigma (code-breaking at Bletchley Park), Archangel (a hunt for Stalin's secret diaries), The Ghost (a ghostwriter uncovering a former prime minister's dark secret, later filmed by Roman Polanski as The Ghost Writer), and Conclave (the secretive process of electing a new Pope, adapted into a 2024 film that won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay).
