Simon Scarrow

Simon Scarrow is a British author of historical military fiction, best known for the Eagle series (also published as the Eagles of the Empire), which follows two Roman soldiers, the freeborn officer Macro and the well-born but initially inexperienced Cato, through campaigns across the early Roman Empire, beginning with the invasion of Britain in Under the Eagle. The series is prized for combining well-researched Roman military detail and logistics with a strong buddy-story dynamic between its two leads, who develop from mismatched superior and subordinate into genuine friends and equals across the run.

Beyond the Eagle series, Scarrow has written historical fiction on Wellington and Napoleon (the Revolution quartet and related novels), a series on Roman general Sulla and the fall of the Republic, and further collaborative and standalone historical fiction, including books co-written with fellow historical novelist T. J. Andrews. A former history teacher, Scarrow is known for grounding his battle scenes and campaign logistics in real historical scholarship while keeping the character relationships, particularly Macro and Cato's evolving partnership, at the emotional center of the books. New readers should start with Under the Eagle, since the series follows Macro and Cato's careers and friendship in a continuous, largely chronological arc across more than twenty novels. No film or television adaptation exists to date.
