Steven Brust

Steven Brust is an American fantasy novelist best known for the Vlad Taltos series, a long-running sequence following a human assassin operating in the Dragaeran Empire, an aristocratic society of long-lived, magically gifted beings. Beginning with Jhereg (1983), the series is distinctive for its narrative playfulness -- nonlinear chronology, shifting narrators, and a structure that increasingly mirrors the tarot-like Dragaeran houses it's built around -- alongside Brust's own Hungarian-American heritage, which surfaces in the related Khaavren Romances sub-series' pastiche of Alexandre Dumas. In this catalogue, Brust appears as co-author of The Gypsy (1992), a contemporary fantasy novel written with Robin Hobb (writing at the time as Megan Lindholm), which sits outside both writers' primary series work. Brust has also collaborated with other fantasy authors, including a long-running writing partnership with Skyler White, and remains active in the genre.
