About the Acorna series

A trio of asteroid miners find an abandoned escape pod carrying an infant who is unmistakably, impossibly, part unicorn — a silver-maned, horned girl whose horn can purify poison and heal wounds, and who grows at an accelerated rate into a young woman determined to find out where her people came from and why they were destroyed. Anne McCaffrey co-created Acorna with Margaret Ball for the 1997 debut, then continued the series for eight more books with Elizabeth Ann Scarborough after Ball departed, building out a science-fantasy universe where genetically engineered 'Linyaari' unicorn-people, ruthless intergalactic slavers, and asteroid-belt mining corporations collide.

As the series grows, it widens from a fairy-tale premise — a unicorn girl raised by kindly miners — into interstellar politics: Acorna reunites with her own species, confronts the predatory Khleevi who nearly exterminated the Linyaari, and eventually starts a family of her own, whose adventures continue the story into the Acorna's Children spin-off trilogy. McCaffrey and her co-authors keep the emotional core consistent even as the scope escalates: found family, the ache of displacement, and a horn that heals standing in for a character who would rather fix the galaxy's cruelty than merely survive it.

How to read this series

Read in publication order, which is also story order: Acorna: The Unicorn Girl (1997) and Acorna's Quest (1998) — co-written with Margaret Ball — followed by Acorna's People (1999) through Acorna's Triumph (2004), co-written with Elizabeth Ann Scarborough after Ball left the project. This is one continuous story, not a set of standalone entries, so starting anywhere but the beginning will spoil Acorna's origin and reunion with her own species. Once you finish the core seven-book run, the Acorna's Children spin-off trilogy — First Warning (2005), Second Wave (2006), Third Watch (2007), all with Scarborough — continues directly into the next generation and should be read immediately after.
