Reportedly born from a bet — Jim Butcher's editor challenged him to write a good book from a deliberately bad premise, "the Lost Roman Legion" crossed with "Pokemon" — Codex Alera turns that mashup into a genuinely ambitious epic fantasy. How to read this series

Read the six books in publication order, starting with Furies of Calderon. This is a single continuous epic — not a case-of-the-book series like Dresden — with one overarching war and political crisis building steadily to the finale, so the books must be read in sequence. There are no companion novellas or side material required; Codex Alera is complete at six novels and was conceived and finished as a single story from the start.
