Cordelia Gray inherits a failing one-woman detective agency when her partner and mentor, Bernie Pryde, dies by suicide, and has to prove she can survive in a profession still openly hostile to a young woman working alone. In An Unsuitable Job for a Woman, her first real case, investigating the apparent suicide of a Cambridge student, forces her to navigate class condescension and outright obstruction from the police as much as the mystery itself, establishing her as resourceful, quietly stubborn, and entirely unwilling to be dismissed. A decade later, The Skull Beneath the Skin sends her to a private island to protect a fading actress receiving death threats during a theatrical production, in a more theatrical, closed-circle mystery that plays against the earlier book's grittier realism.

P. D. James wrote Cordelia Gray as a deliberate counterpoint to Adam Dalgliesh: an outsider working without institutional authority, whose gender is itself a running obstacle within the plots rather than incidental. The two-book series is shorter and more focused than the Dalgliesh novels, but carries the same literary seriousness and interest in class and institutional hypocrisy that defines James's crime writing.
