About the Fox and O'Hare series

Nicolas Fox is a world-class con artist the FBI can never quite convict; Kate O'Hare is the special agent who's spent years chasing him and finally corners him with an offer he can't refuse -- work for the government, using his skills against bigger criminals, or go to prison. Fox and O'Hare, born from Evanovich's late-career partnership with fellow bestseller Lee Goldberg, drops the pair into globe-trotting capers against arms dealers, art thieves, and corrupt oligarchs, each book built around an elaborate heist or sting that lets Fox's talent for disguise and misdirection collide with O'Hare's by-the-book instincts -- and the crackling, will-they-won't-they tension between them. It's Evanovich's mystery-comedy formula (a mismatched pair, a caper plot mostly there to generate set pieces, a slow-burn romance) transplanted from Trenton bail bonds to international heist thrillers, closer in tone to a caper movie than a procedural.

Launched with The Heist in 2013, the series ran seven novels through 2021, alongside two short prequel novellas that fill in how Fox and O'Hare first crossed paths. Lee Goldberg co-wrote the first five novels and both novellas; Evanovich's son Peter took over co-writing duties for The Big Kahuna, and thriller novelist Steve Hamilton partnered on The Bounty. No new entry has been announced since 2021, and the series' status beyond that point is unconfirmed.

How to read this series

Publication order, starting with The Heist. Each book is a self-contained caper with a beginning, middle and end, but the Fox/O'Hare relationship and supporting cast develop across the whole run, so reading in order pays off more than jumping in anywhere.

The two short prequel novellas, Pros and Cons and The Shell Game, aren't required reading -- they fill in backstory (how Kate first caught Nick, an early near-miss) that the novels already gesture at -- but make a fun bonus for readers who finish the main series and want more. Skip them if you'd rather stay strictly novel-length.
