DS Harbinder Kaur is a British Sikh detective working the Sussex coast, sharp-tongued, dryly funny, and quietly navigating a life she's never fully come out about to her traditional family. Elly Griffiths built this series to be more genre-restless than Ruth Galloway: The Stranger Diaries (2018) is a Gothic-inflected campus mystery centered on a murdered English teacher's cursed short story, narrated in part through diary entries; The Postscript Murders (2020) is a lighter, more comic cozy mystery about a literary agent specializing in elderly crime writers who dies suspiciously; Bleeding Heart Yard (2022) turns darker and more psychological, reopening a decades-old teenage death when Harbinder's old classmates reunite; and The Last Word (2024) returns to comic, meta-fictional territory with a murdered obituary writer and a plot about a novel stranger than the crime itself.

What holds the series together isn't a fixed formula but Harbinder herself — increasingly assisted by an unlikely amateur duo, retired teacher Edwin and former nun-turned-PI Natalka, who become genuine partners in the investigations by the second book onward. How to read this series

Read in publication order, starting with The Stranger Diaries (2018). Harbinder's relationships with Natalka and Edwin build from The Postscript Murders onward, and each book leans into a different mystery subgenre (Gothic suspense, cozy, psychological thriller, comic metafiction), so the tone shifts noticeably book to book even as the core detective and her circle stay constant. This is a separate Elly Griffiths series from Ruth Galloway and the Brighton Mysteries, with no shared characters or continuity.
