About the Heart of Texas series

Set in the fictional ranching town of Promise, Texas, the Heart of Texas series follows the Patterson twins -- rancher Grady and schoolteacher Savannah -- along with a wide circle of neighbors, cowboys, and townsfolk as Promise slowly modernizes and its residents pair off, one book at a time. Debbie Macomber wrote all six of the original numbered entries in a single burst in 1998, an unusually fast release pace even by her standards, giving the core series a tight, unified feel before two further books extended the story a year and then a decade later.

The series leans into classic Western-romance staples -- cattle ranching, small-town gossip, a Mail-Order-Bride-style arrival, family land disputes -- while keeping Macomber's characteristic focus on ensemble community life over any single central couple. Promise's residents recur across books even when they're not that volume's main romantic pair, giving the series a lived-in, everyone-knows-everyone texture typical of Macomber's small-town settings.

Heart of Texas predates Macomber's later, better-known Cedar Cove and Blossom Street series but established the template she'd return to repeatedly: a tightly bounded fictional community, numbered entries, and interlocking romances resolved one at a time against a backdrop of gradual town-wide change.

How to read this series

Read the six original 1998 entries in publication order -- Lonesome Cowboy, Texas Two-Step, Caroline's Child, Dr. Texas, Nell's Cowboy, and Lone Star Baby -- since Promise's cast and running storylines build across all six. Promise, Texas (1999) and Return to Promise (2000) continue the town's story afterward and are best read last, as later additions to the core six.
