About The Molly Fyde Saga

Before Wool made him a self-publishing phenomenon, Hugh Howey wrote the Molly Fyde saga, a YA space opera about a gifted teenage pilot navigating a rigid, male-dominated Flight Academy and the wider galactic politics that keep intruding on her life. Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue (2009) opens with Molly, the only girl to have ever passed the Academy's brutal entrance exam, forced to break the rules to save her ship -- and her missing parents' legacy -- from being decommissioned. The saga (also known as the Bern Saga, after the alien threat that increasingly dominates its later books) blends coming-of-age school-adventure plotting with larger stakes involving first contact and interstellar war.

Molly Fyde and the Land of Light, Molly Fyde and the Blood of Billions, and Molly Fyde and the Fight for Peace follow Molly from Academy cadet into a central role in humanity's response to the alien Bern, widening the scope book by book while keeping Molly's character growth -- and her friendship with the sentient AI Walter -- at the center. It's an early showcase of the tight, propulsive pacing that would define Howey's later, better-known work.
