About the Sunny Randall series

Sunny Randall is a Boston private investigator and former cop, a divorced painter with a soft spot for her ex-husband Richie (whose family runs part of Boston's organized crime) and a bull terrier named Rosie who gets nearly as much page time as the human cast. Robert B. Parker created her, reportedly at actress Helen Hunt's suggestion, as a female counterpart to Spenser — sharp-tongued, independent, working the same hard-boiled Boston streets, with her own therapist, her own found family, and her own tangled relationship with an ex she can't quite let go of. Parker wrote six Sunny Randall novels between 1999 and 2007, and the series was revived in 2018, first by Mike Lupica and then by Alison Gaylin, both writing under the same Robert B. Parker's-branded continuation model used for Spenser and Jesse Stone.

The books share Parker's signature style — spare, dialogue-forward, morally direct — filtered through a protagonist whose relationships with her ex-husband, her mob-connected in-laws, her best friend Spike, and her own therapist give the series a slightly warmer, more relationship-driven texture than Spenser's. This is the series for readers who enjoy Parker's terse Boston crime voice and want a woman investigator at the center of it, still juggling a complicated ex rather than a settled long-term partner.

How to read this series

Publication order works well from Robert B. Parker's original six through both continuation runs. Start with Family Honor (1999), which introduces Sunny, her ex-husband Richie, and the found-family cast around her PI work. Parker's six original novels run through Spare Change (2007); the series then goes quiet for over a decade before Mike Lupica revives it with Blood Feud (2018) and writes three more through Revenge Tour (2022), followed by Alison Gaylin from Bad Influence (2023) onward. Sunny's relationship with Richie, and her standing with his family, develops across the whole run, so publication order matters more here than the near-total independence of Christie's mysteries — though each book's central case is still self-contained enough to follow without having read every earlier entry.
