Joe Abercrombie

Joe Abercrombie is a British fantasy author whose First Law series, beginning with The Blade Itself in 2006, helped establish "grimdark" as a recognizable fantasy subgenre -- morally compromised characters, unglamorous violence, and a willingness to subvert classic quest-fantasy tropes rather than play them straight. The trilogy and its stand-alone follow-ups, including Best Served Cold and The Heroes, share a shared world and recurring cast without requiring strict reading order, letting Abercrombie explore different corners of the same brutal, politically fractured setting.

Before writing fiction, Abercrombie worked as a freelance film editor, and has described his prose style -- fast cutting between short, punchy scenes and multiple points of view -- as directly influenced by that editing background. He later wrote the Shattered Sea trilogy, a YA-adjacent entry point into similar territory with a somewhat gentler tone, and the Age of Madness trilogy, a direct sequel sequence returning to the First Law world a generation later.

A new reader should start with The Blade Itself for the original trilogy, though Abercrombie has said the standalone Best Served Cold works reasonably well as an entry point too. There is no film or TV adaptation; the First Law's reputation is built entirely on its prose, dark humor, and influence on a generation of subsequent fantasy writers.
