Laurell K. Hamilton

Laurell K. Hamilton is an American author widely credited with helping originate the urban fantasy and paranormal romance genres in their modern form. Her Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, begun in 1993 with Guilty Pleasures, follows a St. Louis-based animator and vampire executioner in a world where supernatural creatures are legally recognized citizens; the series became notable for evolving from noir-inflected detective fiction in its early volumes into far more explicit, relationship-driven paranormal erotica in its later ones, a shift that has made it a frequent touchstone in discussions of how long-running series can transform over time. She also writes the Merry Gentry series, following a half-fae private investigator drawn back into faerie court politics, which shares a similarly frank approach to sexuality and power.

Hamilton's prose is fast-paced and unapologetically genre-blending, mixing hardboiled mystery structure with fantasy world-building and, especially in later books, romance and erotica conventions.
