Mark Greaney spent more than twenty years bartending, waiting tables and working office jobs in his native Memphis — starting a novel in 1990 as a University of Memphis student and not finishing it for fifteen years — before The Gray Man (2009) turned him into a bestselling thriller writer almost overnight.
