Court Gentry — the Gray Man — is a disavowed former CIA black-ops asset who now works as one of the world's most sought-after freelance assassins, taking on jobs (and increasingly, off-book missions for old CIA handlers) that pit him against rival intelligence services, cartels, private military contractors and other elite killers. Mark Greaney writes brutally kinetic, tradecraft-heavy action that unfolds in real geopolitical hotspots, and the series has only gotten bigger in scope as it's gone on: later books put Court up against near-peer state actors (Russia, China), give him a long-running partner and love interest in Russian intelligence officer Zoya Zakharova, and dig into his own past as a CIA-trained killer.

Greaney, who co-wrote several Tom Clancy continuation novels before and during this series, brings the same research-heavy, weapons-and-tactics-accurate style to Court Gentry's story, which began with The Gray Man in 2009 and became a mainstream hit after the 2022 Russo brothers film adaptation starring Ryan Gosling introduced the character to a much wider audience. Released on an annual February cadence for over a decade, the series is a good fit for readers who want their spy-thriller violence relentless, their protagonist morally gray, and their tradecraft convincingly researched.

How to read this series

Publication order, starting with The Gray Man (2009). The series builds a continuous story — Court Gentry's relationships (especially with Russian operative Zoya Zakharova, who becomes central from Relentless onward), his standing with the CIA, and the consequences of earlier missions carry forward book to book — so this isn't a series to jump into at random the way some thriller series are.

There's a real gap in the timeline: after Ballistic (2011) the next novel, Dead Eye (2013), skips ahead, and the series then goes on hiatus in-story before resuming its now-annual February schedule with Back Blast (2016). No numbered novellas or side-story spinoffs exist in the main line — just the 15 full novels — so publication order is also the only order.
