About the Virgil Flowers series

Virgil Flowers is a Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agent — a laid-back, tattoo-covered, perpetually-in-a-band investigator who reports to Lucas Davenport in the Prey series and first appears there before John Sandford spun him into his own series with Dark of the Moon in 2007. Where Davenport brings big-city wealth and cold fury to his cases, Flowers works small-town and rural Minnesota with a looser, funnier, more easygoing style — he's the guy the locals underestimate right up until he closes the case — which gives Sandford's prose room for more comedy and local color than the flagship series usually allows.

Across twelve novels Flowers investigates murders tangled up in small-town secrets, religious cults, environmental crime and academic backstabbing, often crossing paths with Davenport and the wider Prey cast. The series shares its world completely with Prey and, later, Letty Davenport — characters and plot threads move between all three. Readers who enjoy Prey's mix of procedural grit and dry Minnesota humor, but want a warmer, more small-town flavor, are the natural audience.

How to read this series

Publication order, starting with Dark of the Moon (2007). Virgil Flowers is introduced as a supporting character in the Prey novel Invisible Prey (2007) shortly before his solo debut, so reading that first adds context but isn't required — each Flowers case is self-contained. Familiarity with the Prey series deepens later crossovers but isn't necessary to enjoy Flowers on his own.
