Before she became the authorized continuer of Hercule Poirot, Sophie Hannah made her name with this series of dense, twisty psychological crime novels set in the fictional English district of Culver Valley (nicknamed "Spilling CID" by fans, after the police station at its center). Detective Constable Simon Waterhouse — brilliant, socially awkward, and privately tormented — and Detective Sergeant Charlie Zailer, whose complicated feelings for him thread through the series, anchor an ensemble that investigates cases built around psychologically knotty premises: a mother who insists the baby in her cot isn't hers (Little Face), a woman convinced her own murder has already been arranged (The Point of Rescue), a fertility clinic conspiracy (A Room Swept White).
Hannah's structural signature is dual or fractured narration and a puzzle-box plot that only makes full sense in its closing chapters — closer to a literary psychological thriller than a straightforward procedural, with real attention paid to Charlie and Simon's evolving relationship (including their eventual marriage) across the twelve-book run.
