With the blessing of Agatha Christie's estate, psychological-thriller novelist Sophie Hannah became the first author authorized to write new Hercule Poirot mysteries since Christie's death, reviving the Belgian detective for a new generation of readers. The Monogram Murders (2014) introduces Edward Catchpool, a Scotland Yard inspector who becomes Poirot's regular Watson-figure for the series, in a triple-murder puzzle set in a London hotel. Hannah keeps Christie's signature ingredients — an ingenious, fair-play plot; a closed circle of suspects; Poirot's fussy, brilliant method — while writing in her own voice rather than imitating Christie's prose directly.

Across six novels, the series has taken Poirot to a country house (Closed Casket), back into a case involving a name from his past (The Mystery of Three Quarters), a psychologically claustrophobic coach journey (The Killings at Kingfisher Hill), a country-house Christmas (Hercule Poirot's Silent Night), and a Greek island New Year's Eve murder (The Last Death of the Year, 2025). Hannah's version of Poirot leans further into his interior anxieties and social awkwardness than Christie usually did, giving the character a slightly different, more psychologically probing flavor while staying recognizably faithful to the original.

How to read this series

Read in publication order starting with The Monogram Murders (2014), which introduces Edward Catchpool, Poirot's recurring companion throughout the series. Each novel is a self-contained mystery, so any entry works as a starting point, but Catchpool's relationship with Poirot and a few recurring references develop across the books in reading order. No familiarity with Agatha Christie's original Poirot novels is required.
