Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly is one of the defining American crime novelists of the past three decades, best known for the Harry Bosch series — LAPD detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch, a Vietnam veteran and obsessive investigator whose personal code often puts him at odds with department politics. Connelly, a former Los Angeles Times crime reporter, drew directly on that beat to give the Bosch novels their procedural authenticity, starting with The Black Echo in 1992 and continuing the character across more than twenty books.

He has since built a wider interlocking universe: the Lincoln Lawyer series follows defense attorney Mickey Haller, Bosch's half-brother, working cases from the back of his Lincoln Town Car; the Renée Ballard novels follow an LAPD detective working the overnight "late show" shift, and later team up with a retired Bosch. Connelly moves characters between these series regularly, rewarding readers who follow more than one strand, though each also stands alone.

His work has been adapted extensively for the screen — The Lincoln Lawyer as a film and later a Netflix series, Bosch and its sequel Bosch: Legacy as long-running Amazon shows, and Ballard as its own series — making him one of the most screen-adapted crime writers working today.
