About the Renee Ballard series

Renee Ballard is the detective Michael Connelly built for modern Los Angeles. Once a rising star in LAPD Robbery-Homicide, she was exiled to Hollywood Division's overnight "late show" after reporting a supervisor for sexual harassment — and losing the fight. Working the hours when nobody watches, Ballard refuses to hand her cases off at dawn: a paddle-boarding, beach-sleeping insomniac with a K-9 companion and a deep grudge against departmental politics, she closes what the day shift won't touch.

Her 2017 debut The Late Show stands alone, but from Dark Sacred Night (2018) her series fuses with Harry Bosch's. Hunting the cold-case killer of a runaway girl, she finds retired Bosch raiding her files — and gains a mentor, an ally and eventually a mission, taking command of the LAPD's volunteer-staffed Open-Unsolved Unit with Bosch on her roster. The later books hand the Connelly universe's torch to her generation: The Waiting (2024) pairs her with Bosch's daughter Maddie, and Ballard now crosses into Connelly's new Catalina Island series with Detective Stilwell. Inspired by real-life LAPD detective Mitzi Roberts, Ballard brought the franchise its 2025 Prime Video series Ballard, and her books are now the main line of the Bosch universe — tense, procedural, and carried by a heroine who treats every victim as unfinished business.

How to read this series

Start with The Late Show (2017) — Ballard's only solo case and her origin story — then continue in publication order: Dark Sacred Night, The Night Fire, The Dark Hours, Desert Star, The Waiting. Story order matches publication order exactly.

Be aware that from book 2 onward these are Ballard & Bosch novels: they double as the final arc of the Harry Bosch series. You do not need all 25 Bosch novels first — Connelly gives you what you need — but readers who know Bosch will feel the later books' weight far more. A reasonable compromise is to read a handful of Bosch classics (The Black Echo, The Closers, Two Kinds of Truth) before Dark Sacred Night. Completists should also note Ironwood (2026), the Stilwell novel co-starring Ballard, before her next solo-billed entry, The Hollow (November 2026).

Frequently asked questions

How many Renee Ballard books are there?

Six novels feature Ballard as lead or co-lead, from The Late Show (2017) to The Waiting (2024). The seventh, The Hollow, arrives 3 November 2026.

What order should I read the Renee Ballard books in?

Publication order: The Late Show, Dark Sacred Night, The Night Fire, The Dark Hours, Desert Star, The Waiting. That is also the story order.

Do I need to read the Harry Bosch books before Renee Ballard?

No — The Late Show stands fully alone, and later books explain what you need. But books 2-6 co-star Bosch, so familiarity with his series deepens them considerably.

Which Ballard books are Bosch crossovers?

All of them except The Late Show: Dark Sacred Night, The Night Fire, The Dark Hours, Desert Star and The Waiting are shared Ballard & Bosch novels, and Ballard also appears in the 2026 Stilwell novel Ironwood.

Is the Ballard TV series based on these books?

Yes — Prime Video's Ballard (2025), a Bosch: Legacy spin-off starring Maggie Q, draws on the Ballard novels, particularly her Open-Unsolved Unit era.
