Victoria Aveyard is an American author best known for the Red Queen series, a young-adult fantasy saga set in a world divided between the ordinary, Red-blooded lower classes and a ruling class of Silvers possessing superhuman abilities and silver-colored blood. Beginning with Red Queen in 2015, the four-book main series follows Mare Barrow, a Red girl who discovers she has Silver-like powers of her own and is forced into the royal court's dangerous politics, blending dystopian rebellion plotting with court-intrigue and a prominent central love triangle in the mode of the era's other bestselling YA dystopias. The series became a major bestseller and spawned companion novellas expanding the world.
Aveyard followed Red Queen with the Realm Breaker series, a secondary-world epic fantasy that marked a shift away from the dystopian mode toward more traditional high fantasy, and has continued to write across both YA and adult fantasy since. Her work is generally characterized by fast-paced plotting, morally complicated power structures, and protagonists caught between class or factional loyalties. New readers should start with Red Queen itself, since Mare's story and the wider Silver/Red conflict build continuously across the four-book series and its companion novellas. No film or television adaptation of Red Queen has been produced to date, despite the property having been optioned for film development.
