Across three books the stakes widen from a single gate to the fate of the entire realm, as Corayne's found-family crew each carry their own reasons for the fight and their own doubts about whether it's winnable at all. It marked a tonal shift for Aveyard away from the dystopian rebellion plotting of Red Queen toward a more classically-structured epic fantasy quest, while keeping her interest in reluctant heroes forced to grow into power they never asked for.
