About the Gilded series
Serilda has a habit of embellishing the truth, which has earned her a local reputation as a liar and, worse, the attention of the Erlking, the terrifying ruler of a ghostly wild hunt. When she boasts that she can spin straw into gold, the Erlking takes her at her word and locks her in a mill to prove it -- and a mysterious, dangerously charming boy appears to spin the gold for her, in exchange for payments Serilda can't afford to keep giving up.
Marissa Meyer's take on Rumpelstiltskin trades the fairy tale's brief, transactional plot for a fully built dark-fantasy world of ghosts, godly bargains, and a hunt that steals children on the coldest night of the year, stretched across a complete duology. It's a darker, more atmospheric register than her Lunar Chronicles fairy-tale mashups -- closer to gothic folklore than science-fiction retelling -- built around Serilda's storytelling instinct as both her greatest liability and, eventually, her way out.
