From Blood and Ash introduces Poppy, the Maiden — a young woman raised behind a veil, forbidden to be touched, spoken to, or even seen, her entire life pledged to the gods in a kingdom terrorized by a creeping undead curse. Assigned a new bodyguard, the maddeningly irreverent Hawke, Poppy begins to question every rule she has been asked to die for — and the series detonates those rules one by one, revealing that almost everything her kingdom teaches about its gods, its history, and its monsters is a lie.
Jennifer L. Armentrout builds the Blood and Ash saga on escalating revelation: each book redraws the map of who the villains are, while Poppy transforms from sheltered figurehead into one of romantasy's most formidable heroines. The romance at the center is intense and explicit, but the series' staying power comes from its mythology — a deep history of gods, Primals, and bloodlines that Armentrout explores directly in the companion prequel series Flesh and Fire, with the two series ultimately converging.
This is adult fantasy for readers who want high-heat romance fused with genuine epic stakes, sprawling lore, and cliffhangers that demand the next book immediately. With six novels published and the finale announced, it is nearly complete — an ideal moment to binge.
Read the main series in publication order, starting with From Blood and Ash. The one big decision is the prequel series Flesh and Fire (four books, starting with A Shadow in the Ember): it can be read after you finish the available Blood and Ash books, or interleaved once you're past The War of Two Queens — its revelations reshape how the later books land, and The Primal of Blood and Bone assumes familiarity with it. Note that A Soul of Ash and Blood retells the first book from Hawke's point of view while advancing the present-day story — don't skip it. Visions of Flesh and Blood is an official companion compendium, useful for lore recaps but optional. The finale, The Throne of Bone and Ash, is expected next.
Six novels so far, from From Blood and Ash (2020) to The Primal of Blood and Bone (2025), plus the companion compendium Visions of Flesh and Blood. A seventh and final book, The Throne of Bone and Ash, has been announced.
Publication order: From Blood and Ash, A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, The Crown of Gilded Bones, The War of Two Queens, A Soul of Ash and Blood, The Primal of Blood and Bone. Ideally read the four-book Flesh and Fire prequel series before The Primal of Blood and Bone, as the storylines converge.
The Throne of Bone and Ash, the series finale, was originally expected in spring 2026 and has been reported as pushed later; no firm date is confirmed as of August 2026. Check the author's official channels for the latest.
Strongly recommended. Flesh and Fire is a prequel series set centuries earlier whose events and characters become central to the later Blood and Ash books — The Primal of Blood and Bone in particular assumes you know it.
Yes — it is adult romantic fantasy with explicit romantic content, violence, and dark themes, generally recommended for readers 18+.
