About the Dakota series

The Dakota series follows the Muellers, a farming family in the small, struggling town of Buffalo Valley, North Dakota, as they and their neighbors work to keep their community alive against the economic pressures emptying out small prairie towns across the Midwest. Lily and Sarah Bonner, sisters trying to save their late aunt's hardware store, anchor the early books, while Buffalo Valley itself -- its family farms, its one struggling main street, its close-knit but dwindling population -- functions almost as a character in its own right.

Debbie Macomber wrote Dakota as a more grounded, less overtly cozy entry in her small-town catalog, trading the Pacific Northwest coastal charm of Cedar Cove for the harder economic realities of rural farm country: family land under threat, small businesses failing, young people leaving for the city. The romance plots stay front and center, but the series carries more explicit social commentary about the decline of small-town American agriculture than her other work.

The four-book series traces Buffalo Valley's fortunes and its residents' relationships across roughly two years, ending with the town's future looking cautiously hopeful rather than fully resolved.

Read in publication order: Dakota Born, Dakota Home, Always Dakota, then Buffalo Valley. The series follows an ensemble of interconnected Buffalo Valley residents whose romances and business fortunes develop across all four books, so starting from the first gives the clearest picture of the town and its people.
