Published in 2009 and 2010, Rides a Dread Legion and At the Gates of Darkness are the penultimate movement of the Riftwar Cycle before its concluding Chaoswar Saga, and they read as a direct continuation of the Darkwar Saga rather than a fresh jumping-on point -- readers need the accumulated context of Pug's magical order, the Dasati threat, and the elven kingdoms established across the preceding books to follow what's at stake. It's essential reading for anyone following the Cycle toward its 2013 conclusion, but not a series to start Feist with.

How to read this series

Read in publication order: Rides a Dread Legion, then At the Gates of Darkness. The two books form one continuous story picking up directly from the Darkwar Saga's cliffhanger ending, so read that trilogy first. This is deep into the Riftwar Cycle's overall arc -- come to it only after substantial prior reading, ideally the Riftwar Saga, Serpentwar Saga, Conclave of Shadows, and Darkwar Saga, since the Demonwar Saga pays off plot threads seeded across all of them rather than introducing its conflict from scratch.
