Krondor's Sons follows the twin sons of Prince Arutha -- Borric and Erland -- a generation after the Riftwar Saga, as each is sent on a coming-of-age mission that turns into a fight for his life. Prince of the Blood sends the reckless Borric across the sea to the Tsurani Empire as part of a diplomatic mission, only for him to be framed for murder and forced to survive as a fugitive; The King's Buccaneer follows his brother Erland years later into a plot involving dark elves, a kidnapped bride, and a voyage to a savage new continent. Both novels return to the Riftwar Saga's Midkemia and its royal family, giving longtime readers a look at the next generation growing up in the world Pug and Arutha shaped.

Published in 1989 and 1992, the two novels aren't a tightly sequential duology -- they follow different brothers on largely separate adventures rather than one continuous plot -- but they're grouped together as a matched pair exploring what it means to grow up in Arutha's shadow. Coming after the original Riftwar Saga and overlapping loosely with the Empire Trilogy's timeframe, they work best for readers who already know Arutha and want to see his sons carry the family story forward.

How to read this series

Read Prince of the Blood before The King's Buccaneer, matching publication order -- Borric's story comes first chronologically and the two aren't tightly linked, so there's no risk of spoilers either way, but this is still the natural sequence. Both assume you've already read the Riftwar Saga; Arutha, his court, and the political landscape of Midkemia are taken as known. Skippable if you only want the main Riftwar through-line, but rewarding for readers who want to see the next royal generation.
