About the Dragonwar Saga series

Years after the Riftwar Cycle's story concluded, three young people from the world of Garn -- Hatushaly, Hava, and Donte, the trio at the center of the Firemane Saga -- are pulled through a rift into the relative peace of Midkemia, where they begin training under the magician Magnus and a mysteriously reincarnated Pug. A Darkness Returns launches Feist's newest saga by deliberately fusing his two major fantasy worlds: readers get the Firemane trio's continuing story layered directly onto Midkemia's setting and mythology, with old threats stirring again now that the Cycle's original heroes are gone or transformed.

Published in August 2024 as the first of a planned trilogy (expanded from an initially announced two-book plan), the Dragonwar Saga is explicitly billed by Feist and his publisher as uniting the Firemane Saga with the Riftwar Cycle into one conclusive story, making it the first genuinely new material set in the Riftwar universe since Magician's End closed out the Chaoswar Saga in 2013. It's not a fresh entry point -- readers need both the Firemane Saga and at least the core Riftwar Saga behind them to follow who Hatushaly, Hava, Magnus, and 'reincarnated Pug' actually are -- but it's the active, ongoing frontier of Feist's work as of this writing.

How to read this series

Start with A Darkness Returns, but only after reading the Firemane Saga (King of Ashes, Queen of Storms, Master of Furies) and at least the original Riftwar Saga -- this book deliberately merges both casts and assumes you recognize characters from each. As an ongoing series with only one book published so far, there's nothing to catch up on yet beyond that prerequisite reading; a second volume is in progress with no confirmed title or release date as of mid-2026.
