Terry Brooks's Heritage of Shannara quartet jumps roughly a century past the Original Trilogy to follow Par and Coll Ohmsford, descendants of Wil and Brin whose wishsong magic has resurfaced in Par, alongside their reclusive relative Walker Boh, who is drawn back into the world of magic when the ghost of the long-dead Druid Allanon appears to each of them with a separate, urgent task. Allanon assigns Par to recover the lost Sword of Shannara, sends Walker Boh to reconstitute the destroyed Druid order and rebuild the fortress of Paranor, and pulls the Elven princess Wren Ohmsford -- another of Wil's descendants -- into a mission to find the vanished Elves and lead them home from a hidden refuge across the sea. The Scions of Shannara opens the quartet as prophecy and old magic reassert themselves over a Four Lands grown complacent in an era without a Druid to guard it; The Druid of Shannara, The Elf Queen of Shannara, and The Talismans of Shannara resolve the three interwoven quests and merge them into a single climax as an ancient evil, the Shadowen, threatens to consume the land from within.

For the first time in the saga, Brooks splits his cast across genuinely simultaneous storylines rather than following a single protagonist, and reintroduces Allanon -- who dies before the Original Trilogy even ends -- as a spectral guide whose very appearance signals the scale of the danger. The quartet sets up the reconstruction of the Druid order that becomes central to nearly every Shannara cycle that follows.

How to read this series

Read in publication order -- The Scions of Shannara (1990), The Druid of Shannara (1991), The Elf Queen of Shannara (1992), The Talismans of Shannara (1993) -- which follows the three interlocking quests (Par's, Walker's, and Wren's) as they build toward a single combined climax in the final book. Read the Original Shannara Trilogy first: Heritage assumes familiarity with the Ohmsford family history, the original Sword of Shannara quest, and Allanon's role as the Druids' last defender, all of which it builds directly on rather than re-explaining. No other Shannara reading is required before this quartet -- it's the direct continuation of the saga's main line after the original trilogy.
