About the Hurog series

The Hurog duology follows Ward, heir to the crumbling, magic-touched Hurog lands, who has spent his life playing the fool to hide both a dangerous secret and a sharp mind from a father and society that would destroy him for either. Dragon Bones opens with his father's death forcing Ward to finally step into power he's spent years pretending he doesn't have, navigating political threats and his family's old, dragon-linked magic in the process. Dragon Blood continues directly, widening the political stakes as Ward's choices ripple outward into open conflict.

Patricia Briggs brings the same grounded, competence-focused character work here that defines her later Mercy Thompson books, applied to a secondary-world political fantasy rather than urban fantasy: a protagonist underestimated by nearly everyone around him, hard-won trust, and magic treated as genuinely dangerous rather than decorative.

Complete at two books, Hurog is a tightly plotted duology and a good next stop for Briggs readers curious about her earlier secondary-world fantasy.

How to read this series

Read in publication order: Dragon Bones, then Dragon Blood. It's a direct two-book story -- Dragon Blood picks up right where Dragon Bones ends -- so read them in sequence. The duology is complete and unrelated to Briggs's Mercy Thompson or Alpha and Omega series; no crossover characters to track.
