About the Joel Gustafson series

Before Kurt Wallander made him internationally famous, Henning Mankell wrote a quartet of novels for younger readers about Joel Gustafson, a boy of eleven growing up in a small town in the far north of Sweden with only his father, a widowed lumberjack, for company. Beginning with A Bridge to the Stars (1990), the books follow Joel through the ordinary, formative texture of a lonely childhood -- keeping a secret list of things he intends to do before he turns twelve, forming an intense private friendship with a dog he isn't allowed to keep, watching his father's quiet grief and occasional drinking, and dreaming of the sailor's life that will eventually take him far from home.

Mankell wrote these books between novels in his crime-writing career, and they share none of Wallander's plotting or procedural structure -- they're quieter, interior stories about growing up with an absent mother, a taciturn father, and a restless imagination that turns everyday small-town Sweden into something closer to myth.
