Published by Simon Pulse between 2005 and 2007, the series belongs to the same commercially successful, morally messy YA soap tradition as Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, trading werewolves and vampires for old-fashioned wealth, betrayal, and guilt. It was later adapted into the Lifetime television miniseries The Deadly Seven in 2010.
