Galaxy "Alex" Stern is the sole survivor of a grisly, still-unsolved multiple homicide -- and the only reason she's been offered a full ride to Yale isn't her grades, it's that she can see ghosts, a rare gift that makes her useful to the university's eight secret societies. Beneath Yale's ivy-covered prestige, those societies don't just haunt old buildings; they practice real, dangerous magic, and Alex is recruited into Lethe House, the ninth society tasked with policing the other eight's occult activities. When one of Lethe's own is murdered, Alex has to solve it using the same dark magic she was brought in to monitor.

Leigh Bardugo's first adult series trades the Grishaverse's fantasy-Russia setting for something closer to dark academia and urban fantasy: real-world New Haven, real Yale traditions repurposed as magical ritual, and a mystery-thriller structure layered under the occult worldbuilding. Alex is a damaged, morally compromised narrator -- an addict and trauma survivor navigating an institution built to exclude someone like her -- and the series doesn't flinch from her rougher edges or the violence she's capable of.

Across the published novels, Alex's investigations widen from a single murder into conspiracies reaching into Lethe's own history and Yale's institutional rot, with a third and final volume, Dead Beat, scheduled to close out the trilogy.

How to read this series

Read Ninth House first, then Hell Bent -- it's a continuous story with an ongoing mystery and Alex's own arc building across both books, so publication order is the only sensible way in. Dead Beat, the announced third and concluding volume, is scheduled for September 2026.

This is an adult series (explicit violence, drug use, and mature content) and is not connected to the YA Grishaverse -- no prior Bardugo reading is required, though fans of her worldbuilding will recognize the same command of atmosphere and dark, morally complicated characters.
