The SERRAted Edge series drops elves into the world of professional auto racing: exiled fae nobles, drawn to modern combustion engines the way they were once drawn to swords and swift horses, run SERRA (the Southeastern Road Racing Association) as cover for their real work — quietly countering dark magic and evil elven factions that have followed them into the human world. Written by Lackey in rotating collaboration with several co-authors across the 1990s (and revived decades later with a new writing partner), each book pairs high-speed racing action with contemporary urban fantasy, mixing elven politics, modern technology, and car culture in a way that was distinctive for its era.

The series ran for seven books between 1992 and 1999, went dormant for nearly two decades, then returned with two further installments co-written with Cody Martin in 2017 and 2020, extending the same premise into a more current setting.

How to read this series

Read in publication order: Born to Run (1992), Wheels of Fire (1992), When the Bough Breaks (1993), Chrome Circle (1994), Elvendude (1994), Spiritride (1997), Lazerwarz (1999), then the later revival books Silence (2017) and Breaking Silence (2020). Each book was co-written with a different collaborator and largely follows different characters within the same SERRA racing-team premise, so the series functions more like a shared-world anthology arc than a single continuous story — you can jump in at any entry, though publication order gives the clearest sense of the world's development over time.
